Looking Forward to Fall

Fall arrives early for us here at Knit ‘N Style each year. We are preparing this issue as the summer begins. When we reach the Memorial Day weekend, it’s a signal that our trip to the TNNA trade show is a few days away. We eagerly anticipate the new product launches and what the industry has planned for all of us this fall and winter season.

Every year, the weekend kicks off on Friday evening with the much-anticipated Fashion Show presented by the Yarn Group. This year there were 118 garments shown on the runway, featuring many new yarns from the manufacturers. In spite of the season, vibrant color was evident. Especially interesting were the creative ways some designers chose to incorporate hand-painted or hand-dyed yarns into a piece. Unusual and fresh ideas for construction and “architecture” were abundant. Texture, achieved through a combination of various stitches, was still a strong theme from the spring. I am thrilled to report that Arans, worked in wool and wool blends, are still alive and kicking!

Speaking of wool and wool blends, now is the perfect time of year to pull out the needles and begin that new fall project. Perhaps you’ve been looking forward to working up a winter weight jacket or a pullover for your significant other. We have a lot of great patterns in this issue to get your creative juices flowing and begin knitting your fall and winter wardrobe.

Eleonora Natili, our brilliant fashion reporter, attended Fashion Week in New York, which presented the new collections for Fall/Winter 2008–2009. She brings us her perspective on what you will see in the stores this fall. Use her report and the accompanying photographs as inspiration in planning your fall knitting projects.

We are so pleased to be able to share a piece by former CBS Middle East correspondent, Elizabeth Palmer. Remarkably, in a place far from home and under less than ideal conditions, she was able to derive an inner strength, comfort, and focus from knitting. I would like to thank Deborah Knight from Yarnmarket LLC for bringing Elizabeth’s story to us.
