Log Cabin Bag
from Kate Jackson Knits • www.katejacksonknits.com

Skill Level: Easy
Pattern Sizes: 11” high x 13.5” wide x 5” deep
Sample Uses: Brown Sheep Lamb’s Pride Worsted
Yarn Weight:#4 (worsted weight)
Needle Sizes: Size 10.5 US (6.5 mm)

This project requires the use of 100% wool yarn, because the bag will be felted upon completion. The construction of the bag begins in the center, or “the hearth,” of the Log Cabin block, inspired by a traditional quilt block pattern. Stitches are then picked up along one side, and the first log is worked. Stitches are then picked up across the end of the first log and the side of the hearth, and the second log is worked. The technique is called modular knitting, and this is a wonderful first-time project with which to practice this method. The front and back of the bag are both Log Cabin blocks. The strap becomes the side and bottom gussets. Felt this up, and you have a great gift or project bag for yourself!

Here is another winner from Annie Dempsey, owner of Oat Couture, who always creates classic designs with an updated look. This one-button, shawl-collar cardigan will be the go-to piece in your wardrobe, whether for the office or walking the dog. Annie has provided instructions for two weights of yarn: DK or worsted. The garment length is longer than average (25” to 27”, depending on size), and two pockets are featured on the front. The twisted rib design element is carried through the sleeve cuffs, pockets, up the front bands, and around the collar. Annie is a prolific designer, and her website is a catalog of knitwear designs for the entire family. tank and tee Yin/Yang Tank and Tee
from Knit Three Together • www.K3tog.com
Skill Level: Intermediate
Pattern Sizes: 30 (34, 38, 42, 46, 50)” finished chest
Sample Uses: SWTC Yin and SWTC Yangt
Yarn Weight:#3 (light-weight worsted)t)
Needle Sizes: Size 6 US (4 mm); Size 4 US (3.5 mm) (for edging on sleeves)
Beth Humphreys has designed a pattern in a broad range of sizes, and cleverly provides an option for adding sleeves to the pictured shell. This means it is two patterns in one: a sleeveless shell and a t-top! These classic designs are given an elegant twist with SWTC’s Yin and Yang. The back is worked in Garter stitch using Yin throughout. The front center panel is next worked using Yang (which is Yin with an added strand of tiny sequins) in Garter stitch. Each side of the front is worked separately with Yin in the join-as-you-knit method to the vertically positioned front panel. Beth explains how to easily achieve this clever design detail. If you choose to work sleeves, the cuff is worked in Yang and the remainder of the piece is worked in Yin.
cardiganHug-Me-Tight Fan Lace Jacket
from HeartStrings FiberArts • www.heartstringsfiberarts.com
Skill Level: Intermediate
Pattern Sizes: 72 (80, 88)” finished chest [for Bust 36 (40, 44)”]
Samples Use: Jade Sapphire Silk Cashmere
Yarn Weight: #0 (lace weight or light fingering weight)
Needle Sizes: Size 5 US (3.75 mm) 32”–40” circular needle;
Size 4 US (3.5 mm) for bind off
Don’t be alarmed by the finished size of this incredible jacket. To ensure desired fit, designer Jackie Erickson-Schweitzer suggests measuring your bustline and multiplying that figure by 2. The relaxed-fit wrap was inspired by a vintage garment and is worked in the round. There is a chart for the fan-shaped lace, as well as line-by-line written stitch instructions. There are plenty of good, well-lit photographs, and a close-up of the lace stitch. As an added special touch, a knitter may choose to incorporate Size 6/0 glass beads to enhance this wonderful feminine design. Jade Sapphire’s Silk Cashmere will give a wonderful drape to the piece, as well as feel incredibly soft against your skin.
